Hi,
I've currently got an older whiting 16, which desperately requires a new trailer. The trailer it's currently sitting on is not the standard one.
I was wondering does anyone know where the plans for the original trailer can be found? Are these available anywhere? If not, perhaps someone has one that they wouldn't mind measuring up or letting me measure up and take steel thicknesses etc from?
Am hoping to build a new trailer as close to the original as possible as i'm sure they worked the best for this design.
Thanks, Andre

Gday Andrew,, saw your request and had to register to the Forum to answer,,
I have a Whiting 16, had to do a lot of work on it to get her up to scratch but Oh what a honey of a boat she is now,,
Yes I have the original trailer for her and your right,, an ordinary boat trailer won't do because of the hull shape and no keel, So where are you , I'm north of Whangarei,, I can measure stuff for you but will have to learn how to use a camera and computer better than I know how at the moment to be usefull in that regard,, Niether am I competant enough to scan drawings in , but we could use snail mail I spose
Its strange that these Forums get so little use they are of great value for the xchange of info
Regards………………..Don

Hi Don,
Thanks for your offer! I'm just south of Auckland, so probably 3 or so hours away isn't it… I've managed though to find a few photos of the whiting 16 trailer, and have drawn up a rough sketch with the layout of the bits of steel etc. Perhaps I could just mail (snail mail) that to you to add the dimensions?
Another question - do you use the tilt on it much? Or can you normally get away with not tilting it back?
Very much appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Andre

Yup, you have to use the tilt to get her entered onto the trailer,, By all means send the drawings or whatever and I'll crib from my trailer.. another alternative is come and have a look, but I can't believe there is no one closer,,I live on my own and accommodation is “spartan” ,but your welcome if it would help As a matter of preventive maintainance I never put trailer into the water, except for the tyres , even then its only to an inch or two
Did you get one of the Whitings from Tauranga yacht Club.. ??
I cut a hatch into the aft deck of Suntan which has made her even more user friendly ,, Wonder if that will spark some negative comment ??

Hi,
I used to own a Whiting 16, fun boat. As above, we used the tilt on the trailer. This allowed us to keep the wheel bearings out of the water which is good.
Will be visiting someone with a Whiting 16 at the weekend if it is any help.
Cheers, Matt.

Thanks Don, I might send the sketch up if thats ok? Maybe you could email me your postal address to andrevw111@hotmail.com and I could post it. If it's a bit of a chore to measure I am planning on being up that way around late November so could maybe pop in for half an hour and do some measuring…
No didn't get it from Tauranga, I bought it about 6 months ago from a bloke who had it at the Napier Sailing Club. They obviously dont wash trailers at sailing clubs though because I saw another couple on trademe from sailing clubs with their trailers also rusted to bits.
Matt, thanks for your offer too. Maybe I'll try to find a way of uploading a scan of the plan here somewhere, and people can add dimensions if they are able?
Thanks, Andre

While we are on the subject of Whiting 16s, has anyone also had the experiance of the cockpit floor turning to mush,,,,,ie the rigidity of the floor is lost and becomes quite soft and flexible ,, also fractures in the central bulkhead / hull joint.???
I would be interested if others have had this happen or is it just that Suntan has had a hard time ??????? maybe raced hard on ?????……………………………….Don

Don - No the cockpit floor of mine is still solid, no sign of softness. I dont know about fractures by the bulkhead - possible I'll have a closer look tomorrow. In mine someone has done some fibreglassing around the front of the keel box on the inside, so possibly cracks in there at some stage?
